Journey fact:

Alnmouth Castle is often mistaken as a historic stronghold, but in fact, no castle has ever existed in the village. The confusion likely stems from the dramatic Church Hill overlooking the estuary, which resembles a classic castle mound—yet the “castle” is purely myth, with no archaeological evidence to support it.

Journey Overview

Climbing aboard the X18 at Newcastle’s Haymarket, the journey begins amid the city’s buzz— whatever the time of day, this City always has a sense of occasion against a backdrop of a fascinating range of architecture – Baroque, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Jacobean, Brutalism and Modernism. As the bus pulls away, leaving throbbing Newcastle behind, the scenery feels a bit more leafy as Gosforth beckons, with its friendly suburban feel and a splash of greenery – our favourite is the cricket ground which occasionally hosts one day matches involving Durham! Passing the Regent Centre Interchange, the streets are lined with elegant townhouses and trees, a gentle transition from city to suburb. The shops are good here too – the usual mix of chains, but also some  hidden gem independents – Ashburton Road is a good place to sniff these out!

Northward, fields stretch out beyond Morpeth, where Georgian buildings cluster around the River Wansbeck. The bus rolls through this market town’s charming streets before plunging into the Northumberland countryside. Vast skies hang over rolling farmland as sheep dot the fields near Widdrington, the wind rippling through hedgerows and past stone cottages.

Then, a glimpse of the coast—the sea shimmers into view as the bus descends toward Amble. Fishing boats bob in the harbour, and the salty air thickens. The road winds through Warkworth, where the imposing, perfectly preserved medieval castle rises proudly above the River Coquet, its silhouette etched against the sky.

This really is an unforgettable journey and the bus makes its way through Alnmouth, where colourful houses overlook the estuary, and the its past the grand trees and cobbled lanes of Alnwick – the route edges ever closer to the coast again. Momentum and excitable anticipation builds. Villages like Craster and Embleton offer fleeting glimpses of the sea through gorse-covered dunes, and if you’re lucky, the iconic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle appear stark and haunting against the waves.

As the bus nears Bamburgh, the view becomes simply breathtaking—Bamburgh Castle stands majestically on a cliff, facing the sea with defiance. The beaches here are wide, golden, and wind-whipped, creating a real ambience. After winding through quiet Belford and passing Beal—gateway to Holy Island—the journey ends at Berwick-upon-Tweed. With its Elizabethan walls and dramatic bridges over the River Tweed, this border town feels like a final, fitting crescendo to one of the UK’s most scenic bus rides. There’s few better denouements to a scenic sojourn than the barnstorming Berwick-upon-Tweed!

A Fab Day Out!

Begin your day in Newcastle, a city where history and modern energy blend seamlessly. Start with a stroll along the Quayside, where the Tyne Bridge and the tilting Millennium Bridge frame the river dramatically. Pop into the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art or enjoy coffee in one of the trendy cafes along the Ouseburn. From here, head to Haymarket Bus Station and board the X18—a journey known for being one of Britain’s most scenic bus routes.

As the city slips away bus stop by stop, watch the landscape gradually transform into rolling countryside and the most windswept of coastlines. Alnmouth is the perfect mid-morning stop. Hop off and take a short walk to Alnmouth Beach, a sweeping expanse of golden sand bordered by grassy dunes and the River Aln. It’s peaceful, unspoilt, and ideal for a barefoot wander or simply sitting with a picnic and watching the tide drift in. The nearby village, with its pastel cottages and small galleries, is also worth a brief meander.

Rejoin the masterpiece that is the X18 and settle in for a breathtaking ride north and maybe take a visit to the incredible town of Alnmouth. Explore the magnificent Alnwick Castle, famous from Harry Potter films, with interactive tours and medieval activities. Wander through The Alnwick Garden, featuring the stunning Grand Cascade, Poison Garden, and a treehouse restaurant. Stroll the cobbled streets lined with independent shops, cafés, and bookstores—including the famous Barter Books in a converted railway station. Visit Bailiffgate Museum for local history, or relax by the River Aln. Nearby Hulne Park offers scenic walks. One of our favourite places is The Cheese Room at the Alnwick Deli (5A Paikes Street, NE66 1HX with its eclectic and delicious range of cheeses, chutney, pickles and artisan bread as well as its renowned friendly welcome.

Back on the bus for more scenic thrills and spills. You’ll pass castles, fishing villages, and stunning coastal views before arriving in Berwick-upon-Tweed—England’s northernmost town. Encircled by well-preserved Elizabethan walls, Berwick offers a rich mix of history and sea air. Walk the ramparts for panoramic views of the River Tweed and North Sea, then explore the town’s narrow lanes, independent shops, and historic barracks. Don’t miss the dramatic Royal Border Bridge stretching across the river, especially at sunset when it’s bathed in golden light.

End your day with fish and chips at Corvi Fish Restaurant, which is a long-standing, award-winning, family-run establishment known for its traditional fish and chips, praised for its succulent cod and crisp batter and the chic setting. Castlegate Chippy is a popular takeaway known for its golden-fried fish and chips, offering both delivery and collection options . Foulis, located near Berwick Harbour, is another top choice, allowing patrons to enjoy their meal with scenic views, whilst reflecting on the most perfect of scenic bus adventures!
