London Marylebone to Leamington Spa and Birmingham

Leaving London Marylebone station, the train slips past tight terraces and brick back gardens before the skyline opens to the vast white arch of Wembley Stadium rising above warehouses and rail sidings. At South Ruislip station, the city begins to loosen, with industrial estates giving way to patches of scrubby green and allotments.

Beyond Gerrards Cross station, the line cuts through the leafy Chilterns. Deep cuttings reveal chalky soil and dense woodland, while sudden clearings show golf courses and large detached houses tucked among trees. Near Warwick station, the countryside becomes more historic, with glimpses of Warwick Castle’s towers appearing briefly through trees. The line then threads through neat suburbs and business parks around Solihull station, where modern offices and retail parks dominate.

Approaching Birmingham Moor Street station, the landscape shifts again to dense urban layers, old brick viaducts, graffiti-lined walls, and tightly packed housing. The final stretch into Birmingham Snow Hill station runs beneath glass towers and steel structures, the countryside now fully replaced by the textures of a busy city centre.

From Marylebone, hop on a train bound for Leamington Spa, watching the city soften into rolling countryside. When you arrive, the town greets you with elegant Regency architecture and a relaxed pace. Start with a wander through Jephson Gardens, where neatly kept lawns, exotic plants and the gentle flow of the River Leam create a postcard-perfect setting. From there, drift into the town centre, browsing independent shops or popping into a café for a quick mid-morning pick-me-up. If you’re feeling curious, the Royal Pump Rooms offers a glimpse into the town’s spa heritage. Next, take the short train or bus ride over to Warwick, where history suddenly feels much closer. The star attraction is Warwick Castle, a dramatic and immersive experience where you can climb towers, explore grand halls and even catch live demonstrations. Afterwards, stroll through the charming town streets, perhaps stopping for a relaxed lunch in a cosy pub before continuing your journey. From Warwick, travel onwards to Birmingham Moor Street, right in the heart of Birmingham. The energy shifts immediately. Step out into the historic Bull Ring area, where modern architecture meets the iconic Selfridges building. If you prefer something quieter, wander towards the canals around Brindleyplace, where waterside bars and walkways give the city a softer edge.
