How to get hereJourney fact:
South Shields is home to the UK’s only surviving Victorian pneumatic railway system remains. In the 1860s, an experimental railway using air pressure to propel trains was briefly trialled along the coast. Though short-lived, parts of the tunnel infrastructure still exist, hidden beneath the modern town streets and promenade.
Journey Overview
This really is a fun-filled seaside treat as the bus makes its way out of the fascinating South Shields, alongside Ocean Beach Park and South Marine Park. Scenic thrill seekers can then enjoy a blissful ride close to the beach and the delightful Horsley Hill on the left, a stone-throw away from glorious Frenchman’s Bay.
Expansive fields emerge, a golf course on the right, quarry on the left as the bus heads south through Marsden, then not long after Whitburn gives way to Sunderland with Roker Marina close by and then Fulwell emerging. The bus cuts inside, with the presence of the Stadium of Light on the horizon, home of Premier League newcomers, Sunderland. Over the River Wear and the bus nestles its way into Fawcett Street, in the heart of Sunderland City Centre.
A Fab Day Out!
Start your day in South Shields and begin with a walk along the South Shields Pier and Promenade, where the salty air and panoramic views of the North Sea instantly awaken the senses. Pop into the South Shields Museum and Art Gallery to explore local history (there’s 10% off on selected lines in the Museum Shop if you show your bus ticket!), or take a detour to Arbeia Roman Fort, an impressive site that once guarded the entrance to the River Tyne. Once again, there’s 10% off in the shop if you present your bus ticket! Enjoy a traditional seaside breakfast or grab a coffee along Ocean Road, known for its diverse eateries and lively atmosphere.
By late morning, hop on the E1 heading south to the quiet village of Whitburn. Whitburn offers a peaceful contrast to South Shields, with its picturesque village green, charming stone houses and welcoming local pubs. You might visit Cornthwaite Park for a stroll or walk down to the coastal path that borders Whitburn Coastal Park, where grassy dunes and dramatic views await. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting a variety of coastal species, and the air feels fresh and unspoiled. Meanwhile, if you carry on towards Sunderland, there’s 10% off for those travelling by bus in the idyllic Prego Restaurant on Seaburn sea front – with its sumptuous food and stunning views!
Continue your journey to Roker, a classic seaside resort just north of Sunderland. Head straight to Roker Beach, where golden sands stretch out and the iconic lighthouse marks the harbour entrance. This is the perfect place for fish and chips, perhaps eaten on a bench overlooking the waves. Afterwards, walk along Roker Pier or explore the smaller cafes and ice cream shops that dot the promenade. Roker Park nearby offers a peaceful green space with ornamental gardens and a model boating lake.
In the afternoon, head into Sunderland city centre. Begin with a visit to the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, where exotic plants thrive under a huge glass dome. Then wander the city streets, discovering local art installations or stopping for a drink in a quirky café. If time allows, the National Glass Centre on the riverside is a fascinating place to watch glassblowing in action. Round off your day with dinner in one of Sunderland’s many restaurants—whether you’re after modern British cuisine or something more global.
Sunderland’s restaurant scene ranges from relaxed bistros to lively pub‑style venues. Port of Call impresses with its maritime-inspired setting and extensive rum and cocktail list, complemented by hearty meals. The Engine Room, in a former fire station, blends guest ales with tapas and regular jazz nights for a warm, social evening.
For later on, Sam’s Bar offers funky basement vibes with soul, disco, and comfy seating. Traditional pub culture thrives at The Dun Cow, where quizzes and gin nights are local favourites. Gin & Bear It is perfect for aficionados seeking gin tastings and expert pours. For variety and scale, The 3 Stories spans multiple floors with bars, live music, and rooftop views—a great all-in-one evening out.
