How to get hereJourney fact:
Bellingham is home to the mysterious “Hareshaw Linn,” a hidden waterfall deep in ancient woodland, once the site of an ironworks in the 19th century. Local legend claims the area is haunted by the ghost of a worker who vanished mysteriously—some say you can still hear his hammering at night.
Journey Overview
Spectacular countryside surrounds brilliant Bellingham, a fab place to start a fun-filled scenic adventure on the 680 bus. Waterfalls, trails, classic pubs and stone cottages are a backdrop to this charming, history-dominated journey that follows as the bus meanders towards Hexham, with delightful views as far as the eye can see across Northumberland.
The landscape is remote, close to the River North Tyne, which the bus straddles near Wark and crosses firstly near Chollerford and then again on the outskirts of Hexham and there’s the 17th Century, Chipcase Castle on the horizon, with its 14th Century pele tower, surrounded by dense woods and sprawling grounds.
Cutting through classic Northumberland countryside, with Hadrian’s Wall’s heritage looming large, the 680 bus criss-crosses rugged pastures and perfect scenery before arriving in Hexham, home of the wonderful Abbey, fascinating gaol, splendid architecture as well as markets and parks aplenty. Hexham’s at the heart of this magnificently rugged landscape, but it’s a market town with vibrancy and local charm to be savoured! This really is a bus trip that’s right up there with the best when it comes to scenery and fascination. Not to be missed!

A Fab Day Out!
Start at the Heritage Centre, right at the station yard. It’s a fascinating little museum and tourist info hub packed with local history exhibits and archives. Wander around nearby the Grade I Church of St Cuthbert (13th c., with its unique stone‑slab roof) and admire the Gothic Revival Town Hall on Front Street. A stroll along the South Tyne and a warming coffee at Carriages Tearoom, then it’s onto the 680 bus mid‑morning towards Humshaugh.
Just a short ride brings you to Humshaugh, a village steeped in Roman fringe history. Step off to explore Chesters Roman Fort: one of the best‑preserved cavalry forts, with a bathhouse and a small museum showcasing Roman artifacts. Nearby stands Haughton Castle, a picturesque 14th‑century fortress visible in the parish. If time allows, stroll to the scenic old bridge over the North Tyne.
Back on the 680, you arrive at Wall by the Hadrian Hotel. This is your gateway to Hadrian’s Wall. Even if you don’t walk far, you can admire sections of the Wall and imagine Roman frontier life. The Hadrian Hotel itself offers a nice pub vibe for lunch.
The bus continues to Acomb, a quaint village on the Tyne bank about two miles from Hexham. Visit St Oswald’s church (on the Pilgrims’ Way), enjoy scenic riverside views, and perhaps follow a short local trail such as Acomb to Watersmeet. It’s an idyllic spot for a gentle walk and some quiet reflection. The final leg brings you to bustling Hexham. Explore Hexham Abbey, the medieval Old Gaol, and the lively Tuesday market (if it’s market day) . Relax in Sele Park or perhaps grab a café or pub meal in the market square.
From here, you can either catch a return bus or continue on by train via Tyne Valley. End your journey enriched by Roman ruins, riverscapes, and country charm—all accessible by the scenic 680 route.
