About:

Reading Football Club, known as The Royals, is one of England’s oldest professional football teams, founded on 25 December 1871 in the town of Reading, Berkshire. Their nickname reflects Reading’s status in the Royal County of Berkshire, while an earlier one—The Biscuitmen—paid homage to the town’s famous Huntley & Palmers biscuit factory.

The Royals play their home matches at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, a 24,161-capacity ground often still affectionately called Madejski Stadium by supporters. Historically, Reading spent many decades outside the top tiers of English football before earning promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the 2006–07 season. They returned again for the 2012–13 season after winning the Championship in 2011–12, though both top-flight spells were followed by relegation.

Off the pitch, the club has seen some turbulent years. Financial mismanagement under previous owner Dai Yongge led to points deductions, transfer embargoes, and the withdrawal of Reading Women from the second tier, causing widespread fan frustration. In 2025 the club was sold to Rob Couhig’s Redwood Holdings Ltd, ending that period of instability and aiming for a more sustainable future.

On the field, Reading competes in EFL League One, the third tier of English football, and in the 2025–26 season are working to strengthen their performance and climb the league table. Beyond league action, Royals supporters cherish historic moments like their 1987–88 Full Members’ Cup triumph and deep runs in the FA Cup, including semi-final appearances.

For many, Reading FC remains a core part of local identity—carrying a rich heritage dating back over 150 years and a passionate fan base determined to see the club rise again.
