Journey Overview

The market town of Daventry with its fascinating history is surrounded by rolling green fields and beautiful villages and there’s no better way to enjoy the scenery than on the D1 bus as it approaches the delights of Braunston, where flowers are in abundance. A reservoir on the left of the bus and hedges on the right, then white cottages and grazing cows come into view.

Daffodils in spring time, stone cottages, as well as a lovely tudor design at Kilsby – this really is a delightful scenic sojourn. The journey then becomes even more fascinating as the bus drifts to Drift and large, but tidy, distribution centres emerge – the heartbeat of deliveries across the UK.

Rugby draws closer and grandiose buildings, large houses and independent shops – past the awe-inspiring church and into the centre of the town, a pulsating mix of architecture, as well as boutique stores and great places to eat.

A Fab Day Out!

Start your day in Daventry with a relaxed bite to eat at Early Doors Café, a cosy local spot known for hearty breakfasts and good coffee. It’s the perfect place to ease into the day before exploring the town.

Afterwards, take time to wander through Daventry’s centre, where the gently curving streets are lined with independent shops and cafés. Make your way to Holy Cross Church, whose striking tower dominates the skyline and offers a quiet moment inside. From there, head up to Borough Hill. The short climb rewards you with sweeping countryside views and a real sense of space, making it one of the town’s standout experiences. If you prefer something gentler, Daventry Country Park offers a peaceful walk around the reservoir, with plenty of places to pause and enjoy the scenery.

Hop on the D1 bus and travel onwards to Braunston, a picturesque canal village full of character. Here, the highlight is Braunston Marina, where narrowboats line the water and create a classic English canal scene. Walk along the towpaths and watch boats navigate the nearby locks, or simply enjoy the slow pace of life by the water. The junction of the Oxford and Grand Union canals makes this a particularly interesting spot, with constant gentle movement and activity.

Continue your journey on the D1 to Rugby, where you can spend the afternoon exploring a town rich in history. Begin at Rugby School, the birthplace of the game of rugby, where the historic buildings and grounds give a strong sense of tradition. Nearby, Rugby Art Gallery and Museum offers a mix of local history and creative exhibitions, providing a more contemporary contrast.

Take time to stroll through the town centre, browsing shops and soaking up the atmosphere, before finishing your day with afternoon tea at Café Vin Cinq. With its relaxed setting and selection of teas, cakes, and light bites, it’s an ideal place to unwind after a day of travel.
