Journey fact:

Brackley once played a quiet role in Britain’s horse-drawn transport network, sitting on the old coaching route between London and Birmingham. In the 18th century, it was a key staging post where fresh horses were swapped in—keeping mail and passengers moving swiftly across the country.

Journey Overview

The X88 pulls away from the bustle of Northampton’s Drapery, where traffic hums and shopfronts press tightly against the road, and quickly begins to loosen its grip on the town. As the bus glides past the station area and toward Sixfields, the scenery shifts into something more open and functional. Retail parks stretch out in wide, low blocks, car parks shimmering with reflected sky, and the unmistakable structure of Sixfields Stadium rises into view, its stands peeking above the surrounding roads like a landmark of weekend noise and floodlights.

Beyond Sixfields, the edges of Northampton fall away almost suddenly. The road opens, hedgerows begin to line the route, and the rhythm of the journey softens. Out of the window, fields roll gently in early shades of green and gold, broken by clusters of trees and occasional farm buildings set back from the road. Depending on the season, you might catch neat furrows of freshly turned soil or tall grasses moving in the wind like ripples across water. The sky feels larger here, stretching wide and uninterrupted, often dominating the view as much as the land itself.

As the bus heads toward Silverstone, the landscape takes on a quiet, expansive character. Long straight roads cut through open countryside, and there’s a sense of anticipation as you approach Silverstone Circuit. Even from a distance, you might glimpse sections of track, fencing, or grandstands, subtle reminders of the roar and speed that define the place during race weekends. At quieter times, it sits almost incongruously within the calm farmland, a world-class venue surrounded by stillness.

Continuing onward to Brackley, the scenery becomes more intimate again. The road narrows slightly, weaving between hedges and small pockets of woodland. Stone houses begin to appear, tucked behind low walls, and the approach to Brackley feels gradual, as if the town reveals itself piece by piece. Church spires and traditional rooftops emerge above the greenery, and the countryside gently gives way to a place that feels both connected to its rural surroundings and quietly self-contained.

A Fab Day Out!

Start your day in Northampton with breakfast at The Good Loaf, a much-loved artisan bakery tucked just a short walk from the Drapery. The smell of fresh bread hits you as soon as you walk in, and it’s the kind of place where everything feels made with care. Go for a warm pastry or a hearty sourdough toast with coffee before heading out to explore.

With time to spare, wander through the town centre, passing Market Square and heading towards All Saints’ Church, one of the town’s most striking landmarks. If you fancy something greener, a gentle stroll through Beckets Park by the River Nene gives you a calm start before the journey.

Hop on the X88 from the Drapery and settle in as the bus rolls out towards Sixfields. It’s worth hopping off here briefly to explore the area around Sixfields Stadium. If there’s no match on, it’s still an interesting stop for football fans, and the surrounding retail park is handy for a quick browse or coffee. It’s a relaxed, easy stop before heading back on board.

As the bus continues through open countryside, you’ll arrive at Silverstone Circuit, a highlight of the route if you time it right. The Silverstone Museum and shop are well worth a visit, offering everything from Formula One memorabilia to interactive exhibits. If tours are running, stepping inside the circuit gives you a completely different sense of the place, bringing the scale and history of British motorsport to life.

Back on the X88, the final stretch into Brackley feels slower and more rural. Once you arrive, take a wander along the high street, where independent shops and traditional buildings give the town a welcoming, lived-in feel. For a proper sit-down and a relaxed end to the day, head to The Old Fire Station Café. It’s a cosy spot for lunch or afternoon tea, with generous portions and a friendly atmosphere.

Finish with a gentle wander through the town, perhaps stopping in a local park or simply soaking up the slower pace before heading home. It’s a day that blends town, countryside and a touch of world-famous motorsport, all stitched together by a single bus route.
