Journey Overview

This is a great little route to blow the cobwebs away and enjoy some fab, seaside fresh air. Leaving the energetic, hustle and bustle of Weymouth, the Portland Coaster takes folk on an open-top bus to the iconic lighthouse perched high above the cliff. There’s jaw-dropping views of the coastline and English Channel to be had and many interesting sights, including Chesil Beach and the National Sailing Academy.

Portland’s Coast has been notorious for the number of shipwrecked vessels over centuries and the dangerous coastline features shallow reefs and the Shambles sand-bank, which is even more scary and dangerous due to the strong Portland tidal race. As the bus makes its way out to Portland, you can feel the ambience and picture the sense of foreboding trepidation on days when the sea is crashing against the coastline particularly hard and the sky is moody above.

A Fab Day Out!

The bus whistles its way along the peninsula to Portland, where there’s a great opportunity to take a guided tour of the Trinity House Lighthouse, an iconic Dorset landmark that’s protected vessels of the closeness of the Shambles Bank for almost 300 years. The lighthouse and visitor’s centre are full of fascinating facts and tales. Afterwards, a bite to eat in the Lobster Pot restaurant is highly recommended – the food is great, but the seascape view is utterly amazing! Then it’s back on the bus with the wind maybe whistling behind, pushing you closer to the bright lights and seaside japery of Weymouth, which beckons.
