Journey fact:

Newcastle is famous for its iconic bridges, including the Tyne Bridge, which was built in 1928 and is often compared to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The city is also home to the world's first electric street lighting, which was introduced in 1879 on Mosley Street. Newcastle's famous brown ale has been brewed in the city since 1927.

Journey Overview

This is a fascinating, direct journey from the metropolitan hotspot of Leeds to the lively city of Newcastle with its famous nightlife, history and shopping paradise of Gateshead Metro Centre nearby to Edinburgh, a cultural and architectural epicentre with equally vibrant retail and entertainment.

Leaving noisy and vibrant Leeds behind, the bus makes its way across the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and Moors with views of the luscious landscape entwined with rugged hills. En route is the marvellous Durham with its majestic Cathedral and Auckland House Deer Park. This really is a journey with a sense of occasion and as the bus approaches Newcastle, the view of the incredible arch Tyne Bridge is spectacular and so too when passing over it, the sight of the glorious Tyne below.

It’s a route that provides glimpses of the rugged Northumberland coast and seaside, rural border villages, as well as undulating green fields and edgy hills.

Over the border into Scotland and the route is tantalisingly close to forests and ancient homes and with Lammermuir Hills rising to the east of the road and the Moorfoot hills to the west, Edinburgh beckons and with it all its delights.

Planning to spread the journey over two days?

If you’d like a leisurely journey, then our suggestion is a stop-off in Durham, a captivating city with winding cobbled streets, combining culture with fascinating independent shops, cafes and restaurants, set in the surrounds of beautiful Northumberland countryside.

Durham Cathedral is a ‘must visit’ – a Norman architectural beauty and with St Cuthbert’s shrine and treasury museum.  The Durham Museum and Heritage Centre is also highly recommended and is a converted church housing models of the medieval city and a Victorian prison cell. Then it’s onto the fascinating 11th century castle, followed by a lovely stroll round Crook Hall and Gardens, a stone manor house with picturesque gardens.
