Journey Overview

You are in for a treat of a day starting at the pinnacle of Lancashire’s western coastline. Time stands still in Fleetwood in some ways, and you will see the clock tower opposite the bus stop has no hands but don’t let that fool you – Fleetwood is rich in history and character.

Soon, you will be gazing at a sea of field and hay bale as you travel south between sea and the River Wyre, towards the utterly charming seaside haven of Cleveleys in a mere 15/20 minutes which deserves some time and attention. After a U-turn, the bus continues via the delightful Victoria Road, bypassing the Bispham and Blackpool stretch so you’re marvellously off the beaten track!

Next up is Thornton which offers a lovely village feel after the coastal immersion of the previous part of the journey and as you skim along rural idyllic hedgerow and tree lined roads you will be into the beautiful, bustling and bigger neighbour, Poulton-Le-Fylde in no time. Take in the sights of the lovely villages of Mythop and Weeton too, where you feel deliciously in the middle of nowhere yet the 75 bus will whisk you towards the larger but still tranquil towns of Wesham then Kirkham in no less than 10 minutes. Look at for the AFC Fylde football stadium which pops up amidst the green swathes of field as you approach Wesham.

Sit back for a good stretch of journey punctuated by a brief sojourn through Newton on Scales until you near Lancashire’s answer to the Riviera – the picturesque Preston Marina – before reaching the final destination of Preston, the administrative capital of Lancashire. Here you can alight at Preston railway station or the iconic Preston Bus Station last stop, all a short stroll away from the main throng of pubs, bars, restaurants and history!

A Fab Day Out!

What a day of variety and adventure ahead, so start early to make the most of Fleetwood before your journey itself begins.

Step back in history by visiting Fleetwood Museum – well worth a visit. Here you can find out about the story of Fleetwood’s famous fishing trawlers or take a deep breath into the roots of the world-famous Fisherman’s Friend menthol lozenges. Saunter down Fleetwood Promenade and take in the fresh sea air and don’t miss the lovely Mount Gardens which offers a breath-taking vista from on-high and features the restored Mount Pavilion.

If you need a morning coffee or snack, there are a range of cosy cafés near Marine Hall and if you are visiting on a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday, visit the vibrant Fleetwood Market on Adelaide Street, filled with local crafts, food, and friendly faces!

Time to board the 75 bus and indulge in Fylde coast scenery before you reach the absolute gem of Cleveleys, getting out at the ‘Methodist Church’ stop. So much more relaxed than the big daddy of Blackpool, Cleveleys promenade even on a hot and busy summer day, feels beautifully spacious. Prepare to be immersed in the gentle curves of exquisite yet simple architecture and sculpture. Revel in the “Cleveleys Mythic Coast” along the seafront, an artwork trail which builds on local folklore, and follow the story of the Sea Swallow – all a delight for children and adults alike.

At the opposite end of the scale, Cleveleys offers an invigorating buzz of reasonably priced markets along Victoria Road West, teeming too with independent shops. Enjoy the splendour of a Balinese wood carving shop worthy of a browse! Peckish or thirsty? Lots of culinary choice from a multitude of obligatory fish and chip emporiums and quirky cafes or whet your whistle at one of the cask ale and cider purveyors.

You will be spoilt for choice if you prefer a more low-key and village vibe. You can hop off at the nearby Thornton at ‘Town Centre Stop 1’ where you can feast at the Mimmo Italian, Clay oven Indian, Bowl and Bock Bistro or traditional Bay Horse pub. Next is the neighbouring Poulton-Le-Fylde, a bustling historic market town with a beautiful central square. Here you can pop into the Market Hall or explore St Chad’s Church, a striking Grade II listed building. There is a plethora of snazzy restaurants you could dine in such as The Cube or Twelve Restaurant for modern British food in stylish settings. Alternatively, stay on the bus until Weeton where you can absorb the true beauty of the small, idyllic village at the Eagle pub offering a host of refreshments and hearty British fayre.

Next, hop off at Kirkham, a small market town with a rich Roman past where you can explore the Heritage Trail there or catch your breath at one of the quaint cafés and soak in the local charm.

As the journey takes you towards Riversway – the marina area of Preston, alight at the ‘Makro’ bus stop where there is a small but lovely historic preserved railway – the Ribble Steam Railway. Once at the Marina you could take in a film at the cinema but make sure you take in the views of the Lancaster Canal, bejewelled with moored boats – a picture in itself especially at dusk and in the evening.

Your final destination is Preston, a vibrant city blending history with contemporary culture. Explore Avenham & Miller Parks, visit the impressive Harris Museum, or shop in the St George’s Shopping Centre if there’s time. Finally, round off your fulsome day with a hearty meal be it indulging in spanish delights at Fino Tapas or Bar Pintxos; in the lively Caribbean atmosphere at Turtle Bay restaurant; or classic pub fare at The Winckley Street Ale House.

A day on the 75 bus, through the heart of Lancashire, is one you won’t forget!
