Journey fact:

During the 18th century, Leigh-on-Sea's strategic location along the Thames Estuary made it a prime destination for smugglers looking to evade customs officials and smuggle contraband goods such as alcohol, tobacco, and textiles into England. The town's secluded coves and hidden caves provided ideal hiding spots for smugglers to stash their illicit cargo before distributing it inland. Legend has it that smugglers would use secret tunnels and passages beneath the town's streets to transport their goods undetected.

Journey Overview

The pretty journey commences with the bus crossing the Belton Hills Nature Reserve, with green shrubbery and foliage either side of the bus as it cuts inland slightly and heads towards the centre of Leigh-on-Sea, stopping close to the Library Gardens and beside the St. Clement’s Church. Past independent shops in Broadway, the bus makes its way along Grand Parade and then impressive, slightly grandiouse, white traditional houses that are typical of many classic seaside resorts. Closer to the sea, the bus approaches Chalkwell railway station with the coastline just the other side of the track, but briefly views of waves splashing in visible, nonetheless, before the route moves inland, northwards, then back south again. Chalkwell Esplanade emerges and the bus makes its way alongside the sea, tantalisingly so before again cutting in again, passing large elegant detached houses with splendid gardens in Crowstone Avenue.

The route straddles the railway line now firstly to Westcliff on Sea station then along Cambridge Road with its pleasant, tall trees on the left and into bustling Southend Central. Onto the bus station and this lovely journey comes to an end, close to the coastal frivolity of Southend, such as the famous Pier and Adventure Island as well as the various amusement arcades, restaurants, pubs and not far from the delightful Cliff Gardens for those seeking a serene retreat from the eclectic fun of this fabulous Essex town.
