Get on board the X18 Arriva bus at Golden Square, Berwick-upon-Tweed (southbound)
A gripping journey with the bus straddling the coast and amazing views deep into the North Sea, as well as of blissful villages, historic churches and monuments and the brilliant Bamburgh emerging on the skyline.

Alight the bus at Bamburgh Church Street
Bamburgh Castle sits majestically looking over a delightful cricket ground and the sea, with views of Farne Islands. The Castle is just a few yards from the bus stop. Be sure to peruse this majestic medieval fortification and then check out the RNLI Grace Darling Museum dedicated to a famous local rescuer. Then, have a leisurely stroll down the clean sandy beach with its lovely dunes.

Back to the bus stop at Bamburgh Church Street to get on board the X18 again
Beautiful Bamburgh is left behind, but its more stunning scenery by the sea as serene Craster, with its coastal charm and waves crashing close to the bus, as well as its cobbled stone houses and perfectly manicured gardens appear as the bus makes its way to the medieval magic of Alnwick.

Get off the bus at Alnwick Bus Station
Alnwick’s architecture is fascinating, including the Bondgate Tower and Pottergate Pant, which is an historic water fountain, highlighting the importance of water access in the town’s history. There’s delightful independent shops and great places for a coffee or afternoon tea in amazing Alnwick which is protected by its enchanted castle, home to Harry Potter movies and surrounded by paradisical gardens! Be sure to visit The Cheese Room at the Alnwick Deli (5 Paikes Street), which has an incredible range of cheese biscuits, chutneys and artisan bread and where there’s always a convivial welcome from the customer-centric Ian and Fiona!

Get back on-board the X18 at Alnwick Bus Station (Stand 3)
It’s back on the bus and more great scenery as the coast comes into view with Alnwick giving way to Alnmouth and then Warkworth. Pretty fields and delightful villages emerge as the bus approaches the historic town of Morpeth.

Arrive in Morpeth Bus Station
Morpeth’s a great place to peruse with its perfect blend of history, nature, and quaint appeal. Its cobbled streets, independent shops and cafes, striking floral displays and riverside walks create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. There’s no better town to wander round for just over an hour before getting back on-board the bus!

Over the River Wansbeck the bus makes its way and before long its the hustle and bustle of Gosforth, alongside historic churches and tree-lined parks before the dramatic denouement to this adventure as the bright lights of Newcastle beckon.

Arrive in Newcastle AT Haymarket Bus Station
So much to see and do, from history to theatre, cinema, retail therapy and nightlife like no other. An overnight stay is not for the feint hearted but highly recommended and if not, then Newcastle is a transport hub, the gateway to so many scenic sojourns – South Shields, Tynmouth, Whitley Bay, Sunderland and many more action packed adventures by bus!
