The Brian Clough Statue is one of Nottingham’s most distinctive landmarks, standing at the edge of Old Market Square where King Street meets Queen Street. It commemorates Brian Clough, whose influence on the city—and on English football more broadly—remains extraordinary.

Unveiled in 2008 after a successful public fundraising campaign, the statue reflects the deep admiration Nottingham holds for Clough. Sculpted in bronze and standing around 9 feet tall, it portrays him in a relaxed pose, hands in his pockets, slightly leaning forward. This informal stance captures his personality perfectly: confident, charismatic, and approachable, yet unmistakably authoritative.

Clough’s achievements are central to the statue’s significance. As manager of Nottingham Forest, he transformed the club from a Second Division side into champions of England in 1977–78. Even more remarkably, Forest went on to win the European Cup—now the Champions League—twice, in 1979 and 1980, an accomplishment almost unmatched in football history. Before his time at Forest, Clough had already made his mark with Derby County, leading them to the First Division title in 1971–72.

These successes were achieved with relatively modest resources, highlighting Clough’s tactical intelligence and man-management skills.
