How to get hereJourney fact:
Kirkby Lonsdale is home to the famous Devil’s Bridge, a 14th-century stone bridge over the River Lune. Legend has that it is the result of the Devil striking up a bargain with a wily old lady: he would construct the bridge in exchange for the soul of the first living being to cross it. She sent her dog across first outsmarting the Devil
Journey Overview
This idyllic bus journey will sweep you away from the heart of the vibrant and charming Lancaster to the edge of the Lake District, an endless gift of mountainous scenery.
After getting on the bus at Lancaster Bus Station – which is a short walk from historic hotspots such as Lancaster City Museum and the city’s towering Lancaster Castle – you will journey through the Lune Valley, parallel to the River Lune, and reach Halton and then its neighbour Caton in no time. Both villages are steeped in history and scenic charm. As you snake up towards Caton, take in the glorious backdrop to your left and right of the majestic south Lake – with views that will send shivers down your spine.
Equally, the route towards Hornby offers wowing view after view of farms, hillock and mountains, then, all of a sudden, amidst a cluster of trees and greens, you will see the 13th Century Hornby Castle looming large and heroically.
Next you will zig-zag along a series of idyllic village stops: Wray, Wennington, Melling and Tunstall, perfect for quick photo stops or gentle strolls along country lanes. Take in eyewatering views, as the smell of the countryside hits your senses before you reach the stop of Nether Burrow and its attractive-looking Highway Man pub.
The journey of the 81 bus really is a jewel in itself but prepare for your breath to be even more taken away at the final destination of Kirby Lonsdale and its staggering vistas from the Devil’s Bridge.
A Fab Day Out!
Lancaster is full to the brim with historic and quirky attractions, so have a meander round the city, taking in the gorgeous architecture of places such as the Market Square, its splendid Lancaster City Museum and Lancaster Castle or have a coffee in one of the numerous independent cafes or relish all of the above!

In just 20 minutes, you can alight at one of two chilled and charming villages – Halton and Caton – which both offer attractive walks, historic architecture and memorable experiences. If you are in need of refreshment, the Red Door Café at Halton offers a friendly local spot. Get off at Caton – opposite the community centre to view Roman artifacts such as a millstone engraved with Emperor Hadrian’s name.
As you wind your way through sensational views, you will see the majestic Hornby Castle come into view. If you fancy taking in the stunning architecture of this Grade I listed country house set amid scenic gardens, alight at the Hornby swimming pool stop. There is also a charming tearoom – Hornby Tea Rooms and Lune Valley Gifts – by the post office in the village, an idyllic place for a warming drink, homemade treat or some souvenir-buying.
Speaking of treats, your final destination of Kirby Lonsdale has so much to offer, it is worth spending the afternoon to evening here. If you need to stock up on anything, get off at the last stop to visit Booths supermarket or else egress at the Lunefield Drive stop and head straight to the ancient monument with its three ribbed medieval arches Devil’s Bridge. This stunning, iconic bridge over the River Lune will titillate the senses with amazing riverside views on either side.
The town of Kirby Lonsdale itself, a few minutes’ walk away, is worthy of time and attention. Stroll through charming Georgian streets filled with independent shops, cafés, and local eateries from tearooms to pizza parlour – ideal for a snack, lunch or a hearty meal. The Royal Bar and Cafe offers a lovely spot to partake in a cold drink, afternoon tea or a refreshing ice cream cone. After you have fed, watered and rested, round off your day by feasting your eyes on the must-see ‘Ruskin’s View’.
