About:

Preston North End Football Club, commonly known as PNE or simply Preston, is a historic English football club based in the city of Preston, Lancashire. Founded in 1880, the club is one of the oldest professional football teams in the world. It holds a prestigious place in football history, being a founding member of the Football League in 1888 and the first-ever league champions. Remarkably, Preston North End went unbeaten throughout that inaugural 1888–89 season, earning them the nickname “The Invincibles.” They also completed the first league and FA Cup double that same year.

Preston enjoyed early success in English football, winning the league again in 1889–90 and the FA Cup twice (1889 and 1938). Though they haven’t returned to the top flight since 1961, the club remains a respected name in the English Football League Championship (second tier), consistently competing at a high level. Known for nurturing young talent, PNE famously gave a debut to a young Tom Finney, who would go on to become one of England’s all-time greats. Sir Tom Finney’s legacy remains deeply embedded in the club’s identity.

Deepdale Stadium, the home of Preston North End, is equally steeped in history. Often referred to as the oldest continuously used professional football ground in the world, Deepdale has been PNE’s home since 1875, predating even the formation of the Football League. While the stadium has undergone significant redevelopment over the years, it has retained its historical importance. Today, Deepdale is a modern all-seater stadium with a capacity of just over 23,000.

The stadium consists of four main stands: the Sir Tom Finney Stand, the Alan Kelly Town End, the Invincibles Pavilion, and the Bill Shankly Kop, each named after club legends. Notably, a statue of Sir Tom Finney, titled “The Splash,” stands outside the ground and is one of the most iconic pieces of football art in the UK.

Deepdale also houses the National Football Museum’s former home, further underlining its cultural relevance in the sport’s history.

In both club and stadium, Preston North End represents the deep roots and tradition of English football—proud, historic, and enduring. While top-flight success has eluded them in recent decades, their loyal fanbase and rich legacy continue to define their presence in the modern game.
