Museum Gardens, York

Museum Gardens is a 10-acre public park in central York that blends history, horticulture and open space. The grounds were laid out in the Victorian era and wrap around the substantial ruins of St Mary's Abbey, a medieval Benedictine monastery. You'll walk amongst the abbey's red sandstone walls, arches and towers while enjoying landscaped lawns, tree-lined paths and seasonal planting.

The gardens are home to the Yorkshire Museum at the northern end; many visitors combine a stroll through the grounds with a museum visit. The site slopes down towards the River Ouse at the south, giving you views of the water and Lendal Bridge. It's one of York's most pleasant spots for a break during city sightseeing, especially if you're on the open-top bus tour, and entirely free to wander.

The abbey ruins themselves date to the 12th century and remain substantial enough to convey the scale of the original monastery. Medieval stone fragments and carved details are visible throughout, and interpretation boards explain the abbey's history and layout. The gardens are accessible year-round and popular with both locals and visitors.
