Yorkshire Museum, York

The Yorkshire Museum occupies a purpose-built neoclassical building at the northern end of Museum Gardens and holds extensive collections covering the region's natural and cultural history. Its displays run from geological specimens and fossils through to Roman York (Eboracum), medieval artefacts, and material from the city's development. You'll see Roman mosaics, stone carvings, Viking finds and domestic objects that chart how the region was inhabited and used across millennia.

The museum's geology galleries are particularly strong, with fossils from the Yorkshire coast and specimens illustrating the region's landscape formation. The Roman collections reflect York's importance as a legionary fortress and civilian centre; coins, pottery, statuary and inscriptions bring that period to life. Medieval sections include church carvings and abbess jewellery. The local history galleries touch on York's medieval and post-medieval significance as a commercial and administrative hub.

A visit typically takes two to three hours depending on your pace and interests. The building itself is an 1870s Victorian structure with good natural light and clear layout. A café is on-site. The museum is easily reached on the open-top bus tour, and the surrounding Museum Gardens provide pleasant grounds to explore before or after your visit.
