How to get hereJourney fact:
Clitheroe is home to one of the oldest working libraries in the country, the Clitheroe Library, which was established in 1824. What makes it particularly interesting is that it was founded by the town’s influential residents, who were part of the local Clitheroe Subscription Library, a private institution set up for cultural enrichment.
Journey Overview
In under 2 hours, this is a fairly rapid, direct tour across the hilly Ribble Valley terrain, from Yorkshire, deep, oh so deep into Lancashire’s finest!
The view from the bus window on this journey offers a captivating tapestry of rural Lancashire and vibrant small towns, as Yorkshire is left behind. Starting in Skipton, the scene is framed by the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales, with their patchwork of fields and drystone walls. As you head out of Skipton, the lush, green countryside unfurls with quiet villages dotting the landscape. The journey toward Earby is marked by steep, dramatic slopes, and as the bus winds along narrow roads, you’ll catch glimpses of distant moors that stretch out beneath a sky often filled with changing clouds. There’s some great aerial views to be had.
Entering Earby, the landscape transforms into a blend of stone cottages and the occasional industrial building, a reminder of the town’s textile heritage. From here, as you climb towards Barnoldswick, the view becomes more expansive – check out the blooming hanging baskets in this fab small town. The surrounding hills appear even grander, with the town itself nestled quietly beneath the dramatic backdrop of Pendle Hill. Barnoldswick feels like a tucked-away corner of the world, surrounded by canal paths and fields that seem to go on forever.
Moving toward Gisburn, the landscape shifts again. The roads open up, revealing more open countryside—farmland and forests create a peaceful scene. As you pass through Chatburn and Clitheroe, the townhouses and local landmarks like the Clitheroe Castle slowly come into view, adding a historical charm to the journey, as the bus navigates its way round narrow streets, surrounded by small independent restaurants and shops. The gently flowing River Ribble is a constant companion as the bus crosses the valley.
Whalley offers a glimpse of the picturesque village, with its iconic Abbey ruins close by and the bus passes the lovely Wine Bar, plus restaurants and shops and in the hill leading down to these, the houses are almost palatial. This is a wonderful, almost paradisical place! From Langho through to Mellor Brook, the views of green meadows and small farms are complemented by the calm, rural atmosphere. Farringdon Park brings you closer to the edge of urban life before Preston finally emerges, with its busy streets and urban skyline. As the bus approaches the heart of Preston, the landscape shifts dramatically from pastoral serenity to the vibrant hum of city life, marking the end of a beautiful, diverse journey.
A Fab Day Out!
Start your day in Skipton, a charming market town known as the “Gateway to the Dales.” Before catching the bus, take some time to explore the historic Skipton Castle. Dating back to the 12th century, it offers sweeping views of the town and surrounding countryside. Wander through its gardens and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. After, take a leisurely stroll along the Canal Walk, where you can admire the picturesque scenes of narrowboats floating by and the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales in the distance. Before you board the bus, you might want to pop into one of the cafés in the town center for a coffee or a quick snack.
Next, hop on the bus and head towards Barnoldswick. As you pass through rolling hills, the small, industrial town of Barnoldswick reveals itself. Known for its aviation history, stop at the Barnoldswick Museum to learn about the pioneering aircraft built here. Once you’ve absorbed a bit of local history, enjoy the tranquillity of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. A walk along the canal towpath provides a peaceful escape, with views of distant hills and the occasional swan gliding by.
Continuing on to Clitheroe, this charming town in the Ribble Valley is perfect for an afternoon stop. The town is best known for Clitheroe Castle, a Norman stronghold with a fascinating museum and panoramic views from its keep. After exploring the castle grounds, make your way to Tom’s Tables for lunch. A cosy yet modern eatery, it offers a delightful menu featuring locally sourced produce. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the food, from hearty British classics to light salads, is a treat.
From Clitheroe, the bus takes you to Whalley, where the stunning ruins of Whalley Abbey await. Wander through the tranquil grounds, soaking in the history and the beauty of this peaceful spot. Finally, head to Preston, the largest city on your journey. Before you finish your day, explore the city’s vibrant streets, visit the Harris Museum, and wander around the iconic Market Hall.
