Lendal Bridge, York

Lendal Bridge is a cast-iron footbridge crossing the River Ouse in the heart of York, built in 1863 at the height of Victorian engineering confidence. Its distinctive high arches and ornamental ironwork make it one of the city's most recognisable structures. The bridge connects Museum Gardens on the west bank with the city centre to the east, and its elevated position gives good views along the river in both directions.

The bridge was designed by Thomas Page, a prominent Victorian engineer, and built to ease pedestrian movement across the Ouse as York expanded. The cast-iron construction is typical of the era, with decorative panels and substantial supporting arches that remain fully functional today. Walking across, you get a sense of the engineering achievement and can see the river, Museum Gardens and city walls from the mid-span.

Lendal Bridge is a regular stop on the open-top bus tour's sightseeing route, though passengers see it rather than stop. For pedestrians, it's a straightforward crossing that links two key areas of the city centre and offers a moment to take in the river and surrounding architecture. The bridge has become a photogenic York landmark and is particularly striking when lit after dark.
