About:

Nestled in the heart of Highland Perthshire, Pitlochry is a small town with dramatic scenery, Victorian charm, and plenty to explore on foot. Surrounded by forested hills and the River Tummel, it makes an excellent stop for a few hours or a relaxed day.

One of the town’s most famous attractions is the Pitlochry Dam and Fish Ladder. Built in the mid-20th century as part of a hydroelectric scheme, the dam includes a long stepped fish ladder that allows Atlantic salmon to travel upstream to their spawning grounds. A visitor centre explains how the system works, and large viewing windows let you watch the salmon as they pass through during the migration season. The dam also offers lovely views over Loch Faskally and the surrounding wooded hills.

For a scenic walk, head toward Faskally Wood. This tranquil forest is criss-crossed with easy trails that wind past tall pine trees, mossy ground, and small streams. In autumn the colours are particularly striking, and the woodland hosts the popular The Enchanted Forest each year, when the trees are illuminated with dramatic lighting and music after dark.

Another highlight of the town is the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, often described as “the theatre in the hills.” Overlooking the river, it runs a busy programme of plays, musicals, and concerts throughout the year. Even if you’re not attending a performance, the riverside setting and gardens nearby are worth visiting for a quiet stroll.

The town centre itself is full of character, with traditional stone buildings lining Atholl Road. Independent shops sell local crafts, whisky, and Highland gifts, while cafés and bakeries offer places to relax and watch the world go by.

Just outside town, whisky lovers may want to visit Blair Athol Distillery, one of Scotland’s oldest working distilleries. Tours explain the whisky-making process and usually end with a tasting of its rich Highland single malt.

Whether you spend your time walking beside the river, exploring woodland trails, or browsing the friendly high street, Pitlochry offers a perfect introduction to the landscapes and culture of the Scottish Highlands.
