Oxford United Football Club
About:
Oxford United Football Club is a professional football team based in Oxford, England, nicknamed The U’s or the Yellows. Founded in 1893 as Headington Football Club, the club took its current name in 1960 before joining the Football League in 1962. It plays home matches at the Kassam Stadium, a ground with a capacity around 12,500, where it has been based since 2001.
The club has a proud and sometimes dramatic history. After working its way up through the lower divisions, Oxford United achieved successive promotions in the 1980s, rising from the lower leagues into the old First Division (the top tier at that time). During that golden era, the U’s won the League Cup in 1986, the club’s most significant trophy, though they missed out on European competition due to the ban on English clubs at the time. Following relegation from the top flight in 1988, the club faced an extended period of decline, culminating in relegation out of the Football League altogether in 2006.
In the years that followed, Oxford United worked its way back up the English football pyramid. After returning to League Two in 2010, they earned promotion to League One and, more recently, reached the EFL Championship (the second tier) through the play-offs, marking their return to that level for the first time in decades. As of the 2025–26 season, the U’s are competing in the Championship.
Off the pitch, the club is actively planning for the future. Major proposals for a new 16,000-seat stadium at Kidlington have been approved by local authorities, aiming to provide a permanent, modern home and broader facilities for fans and the community.
Beyond matchdays, Oxford United contributes to local life through its community programme, supporting wellbeing, youth engagement, and regional projects throughout Oxfordshire.
With over 130 years of history, Oxford United combines traditional community roots with ongoing ambition, embracing both its heritage and a forward-looking vision.
