About:

Mowbray Park in Sunderland is a lush, historic oasis tucked into the heart of the city, offering both a tranquil retreat and a living reminder of Victorian ambition. Established in 1857 as “The People’s Park,” its creation followed a public health drive in response to a cholera epidemic, and was made possible through a government grant to purchase land from the Mowbray family.

Upon opening by John Candlish, the park featured winding walkways, steep hummocks carved from an old quarry, and leafy groves designed to provide a restful urban escape. A major expansion in 1866 added a lake and terrace, alongside a cast-iron footbridge over the old railway line, thus creating a connected and elegant layout. In 1879, the grand Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens were introduced—a Crystal Palace‑style glasshouse added cultural gravitas to the park.

Through World War II the park suffered. Bombing damaged structures, and railings and the beloved bandstand were melted down for the war effort. The site was repurposed for vegetable plots during the conflict and fell into disrepair in the post-war years. The remarkable restoration funded by a Heritage Lottery grant in the 1990s saw the revamp of the lake, the rebuilding of the Winter Gardens, the re-creation of the bandstand, and the installation of whimsical artworks—the whimsical walrus sculpture and an imaginative Alice in Wonderland-themed play area among them—culminating in the park’s 2000 reopening.

Reflecting its status as a Green Flag Award site and one of the oldest municipal parks in the North East, Mowbray Park combines formal Victorian features—statues of local heroes such as Jack Crawford and Sir Henry Havelock, a cast-iron drinking fountain, war memorials—with serene lawns, decorative flowerbeds, a charming lake full of swans, and a vibrant bandstand.

Today it stands as a jewel of the city centre: a place for peaceful walks, community events and family days out. Whether feeding the ducks, exploring the Winter Gardens, admiring the architecture, or discovering whimsical sculptures, Mowbray Park offers a blend of history, nature, and local charm
