Morecambe Football Club
About:
Morecambe Football Club, known as “The Shrimps,” is a seaside team with a history stretching back to 1920. Their early years were spent in regional leagues, including the Lancashire Combination. They slowly built up from non-league football, winning the FA Trophy in 1974, and in 1995 securing promotion from the Northern Premier League into what evolved into the Conference. Their breakthrough into the Football League came in 2007, when they beat Exeter City in the Conference play-off final, entering League Two for the first time.
Perhaps the high point of Morecambe’s rise was in 2021, when they won the League Two play-off final at Wembley against Newport County, securing promotion to League One—the third tier of English football—for the first time in their history. That stay in League One was brief. After two seasons battling in a higher division, they were relegated in 2023 back to League Two.
In the most recent season (2024–25), Morecambe struggled in League Two, finishing last and suffering relegation to the National League—the fifth tier—thus ending an 18‑year run as a Football League club.
Beyond the ups and downs, Morecambe have also earned recognition off the pitch, for example gaining an EFL Family Excellence ranking (silver standard) for community engagement and matchday experience.
However, fortunes at the club are currently troubled. Alongside relegation, Morecambe faces serious financial and ownership issues. There have been difficulties paying wages, uncertainty about insurers, and a delayed or incomplete change of ownership. The club was suspended from the National League due to concerns around their ability to meet financial obligations and licensing requirements when entering the 2025‑26 season, but thankfully a buyer has been found and they are now competing again!
