About:

The Bob Abley Art Gallery, nestled within Spennymoor Town Hall in County Durham, stands as one of the North East’s most dynamic and expansive art spaces. Established in 2011 by retired teacher and voluntary curator Bob Abley, the gallery was conceived to celebrate and preserve the region’s rich artistic heritage, particularly the legacy of the Spennymoor Settlement Sketching Club founded in 1931.

Spanning two floors, the gallery showcases an ever-evolving collection of works from over 35 artists, encompassing a diverse range of styles from traditional mining art to contemporary and street art. A highlight is the Norman Cornish Room, dedicated to Spennymoor’s renowned artist. Visitors can explore a recreated version of Cornish’s original studio, offering insight into his creative process, and view a selection of his original artworks and prints, many of which are available for purchase.

The gallery also features the ‘Coming Home’ exhibition by twin artists Chris and Steve Rocks. Known for their collaborative approach, the Rocks brothers create evocative landscapes that capture the interplay of light and nature, with over 30 original pieces and hand-embellished prints on display.

Beyond its exhibitions, the Bob Abley Art Gallery serves as a cultural hub, reflecting Spennymoor’s social history and artistic evolution. Open seven days a week with free admission and parking, it invites art enthusiasts and collectors alike to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of local and international art.
