Raby Castle
About:
Raby Castle stands as one of the most impressive intact medieval fortresses in the north of England, its powerful exterior dominating the picturesque parklands of County Durham. Built in the fourteenth century by the influential Neville family, who were contemporarily styled “the makers of Kings,” the castle reflects their immense prestige and ambition. The castle boasts a long and fascinating history, being the birthplace of Cecily Neville, who became the mother of Kings Edward the Fourth and Richard the Third.
The site was also the dramatic scene for the plotting of the Rising of the North, a rebellion that ultimately led to the Nevilles forfeiting the estate to the Crown. It remained Crown property for over forty years before being purchased by Sir Henry Vane the Elder. The Vane family, whose descendants hold the title of Lord Barnard and own the High Force Hotel and Waterfall, have owned Raby for nearly four centuries, and it remains their private family home today.
The architecture is famed for its sheer size and irregular plan, featuring nine towers along its perimeter, including the formidable four-storey Neville Gateway. Visitors stepping inside can explore superb collections of art, including works by old masters and portraits, as well as period furnishings and armour. Notable rooms include the Baron’s Hall and the Octagonal Drawing Room, where one can appreciate the scale of this historic residence.
