Take the 840 Coastliner bus from outside York station

The Coastliner bus is one of the most scenic in the UK. You can board the 840 or 843 from Leeds or York to Malton. Or, if you are coming from Whitby it’s the 840 and 843 from Scarborough. The customer service is renowned to be fantastic and the fares are only £3 each way for adults and £1.50 for children. Those with a Concessionary Pass go free!

Explore the Town Centre

Every building in Malton has something eye-catching in its design, from the majestic Palace Theatre to the grandiose Wesley Centre and the many mind-boggling shops in and around the Market Palace, set against a backdrop of St Michael’s Church. Scoops Ingredients Shop, Derek Fox Butchers, Dales of Malton, Paley’s Fruit and Veg – it’s one independent store after another, all oozing in character.

Be sure to check out Kemps Books too – where you can lose yourself in literature – all laid out in an eye-catching and easy to explore way, with a pleasant garden out the back where you can lounge to your leisure. Kemps also organises book launches and super events at The Milton Rooms Art Centre, just off Market Street. It really is the ultimate haven for bookworms!

Visit the Malton Museum

Malton Museum explores the town’s rich Roman heritage, local archaeology and everyday, fascinating history through fascinating objects, displays and stories, offering a compact but engaging insight into Malton’s past and its surrounding countryside.

The museum is open on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays only!

If you are travelling on other days, then we’d suggest instead maybe paying a visit to the Wesley Centre for a walk round to devour the delights of the beautiful Methodist Church and architecture. There are many community events taking place here too. Then, peruse the fabulous Talbot Yard which is an award winning regenerated stables that is now home to delightful artisan food producers.

Board the 840 bus to Eden Camp

The journey is really pleasant as the bus makes its way through Old Malton, towards the North Yorkshire Moors and deep in beautiful countryside.

Eden Camp is an atmospheric modern history museum set in a former prisoner of war camp, bringing wartime Britain to life through immersive huts, displays, artefacts and personal stories.

Bus back to Malton, alighting at The Old Lodge Hotel

When leaving the bus, carry on walking down the hill towards Malton and the first turning on the left is Church Hill which leads to the delightful Castle Gardens, passing the Old Lodge.

Castle Gardens is so serene beside the River Derwent, offering open lawns, riverside views and a tranquil place to pause towards the end of the day, set beside the glorious looking, historical Lodge.

Take a walk down Old Maltongate, towards the town centre, turn right up Saville Street, into Market Place and immediately on the left is the Royal Oak pub, a Grade 2 listed building, where the welcome is always friendly and the real ale guest beers particularly tasty!

Dinner at The Talbot

Leave the Royal Oak and walk up Market Place, then left into Market Street. It’s a lovely stroll past the many independent shop fronts and fascinating buildings. Turn right into Yorkersgate and the wonderful Talbot Hotel in across the road, ready to serve you a real treat for dinner. The Talbot Hotel serves refined, seasonal and the most elegant food with a strong Yorkshire focus, making the most of local produce from the surrounding food capital. There’s also a great outside dining area.

Take the 843 bus back to York

Walk back towards the town down Yorkersgate and then into Railway Street and the bus stop here to take 843 or 840 bus to York (the suggested 21:22 is the 843). It’s been the end of a great day, with so much packed in – from quirky shopping, historic brilliance and insight through to sumptuous scenery and delicious food and drink! Unforgettable!
