The Chester City Walls form one of the most complete and best-preserved defensive circuits in Britain, encircling the historic core of Chester. The origins of the walls date back to Roman times, when Chester was established as the fortress of Deva Victrix in the 1st century AD. The Romans built the first defensive boundary in stone, creating a strong perimeter to protect the settlement. Over the centuries, the walls were expanded, repaired and reshaped, particularly during the medieval period, when they were strengthened with towers, gates and additional features to defend the city against attack.

Walking along the walls today, you can trace this layered history in the changing textures of the stone.
