About:

Glenfinnan is one of the most atmospheric and historically significant places in the Scottish Highlands. Set at the head of Loch Shiel and surrounded by steep green hills, the village combines dramatic scenery with powerful moments from Scotland’s past.

The most famous landmark here is the Glenfinnan Monument. This tall stone column stands beside Loch Shiel and commemorates a pivotal moment in Scottish history. In 1745, Charles Edward Stuart raised his royal standard here, beginning the Jacobite uprising that sought to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British throne. Clans from across the Highlands gathered in this valley to support him before marching south. The monument was built in 1815 and features a statue of a Highland clansman at the top, symbolising those who joined the cause.

Visitors can walk around the monument and down to the edge of Loch Shiel, where the long freshwater loch stretches dramatically between the mountains. The views here are among the most iconic in the Highlands and it is easy to imagine the gathering of Jacobite clans in this very landscape nearly three centuries ago.

Another major attraction is the Glenfinnan Viaduct. This sweeping concrete railway bridge curves across the valley with 21 elegant arches and forms part of the West Highland Line. A short walk uphill leads to a famous viewpoint overlooking the viaduct. From here, visitors can often see the Jacobite Steam Train crossing the bridge, creating one of Scotland’s most photographed scenes.

The viaduct became internationally famous after appearing in the Harry Potter films as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express. As a result, many visitors come specifically to watch the steam train crossing the arches.

For those wanting to learn more about the area, the nearby Glenfinnan Visitor Centre provides exhibitions about the Jacobite story and the landscape surrounding Loch Shiel.

Whether you come for the history, the railway views or the sweeping Highland scenery, Glenfinnan offers one of the most memorable and meaningful stops in the Scottish Highlands. 🏔️🚂
