A Malton masterpiece of a day out by bus
Take the 843 bus from York Railway Station
It’s a scenic bus journey from York out towards the rugged and stunning North Yorkshire Moors to marvellous Malton. The bus actually starts in Leeds (at 08:15), so you can pick it up there or along the way to York or further on.

Alight the bus at Malton Bus Station
Walk towards the town centre up Railway Street over the River Derwent, checking out the lovely view. Then, turn right up Old Maltongate, then the second turning on the right, past the Old Lodge and into Castle Gardens.

Peruse Castle Gardens
Wander through this peaceful green space, look for wildlife including birds and rabbits, enjoy a quiet sit among the trees, and soak up traces of the town’s historic castle site. It’s a gentle, hidden spot close to Malton’s busy foodie centre.

Walk back into Malton
Back down Old Maltongate, then take the sixth turning on the right into Saville Street.
Brunch at The Patisserie
There’s a delectable selection of cakes and sweet treats here for breakfast in this. The pancakes are legendary, so too the crumpets and eggs benedict!

Sample the delights of Malton's independent shops
There’s one emporium after another in Malton Town Centre, from the book-lovers haven of Kemps bookshop to the incredible Scoops Ingredients Shop, or the jewellery and other gifts that are gems in Plum – this really is a fascinating shopping experience like no other. Many of the shops are grouped around Market Place, but literally every single sheet is resplendent in quirky outlets where you can lose yourself and there are bargains aplenty.

Lunch at The Spotted Cow
The locally produced food is top notch at this fabulous 16th century pub with its cask ales and famous all-day burger menu! The Spotted Cow is less than 5 minutes’ walk from Market Place and is situated in Spital Street.

A leisurely walk back through the town
Down Spital Street, along Market Place and then Saville Street before arriving in Yorkersgate. Turn right and the Malton Museum is situated a couple of minutes away (on the right).
Discover Malton's heritage at the Museum
Malton Museum is a small but fascinating museum exploring the town’s rich past, especially its Roman history. Its collections include artefacts from excavations at Roman Malton, Langton and Crambeck, alongside objects from Malton, Norton and Ryedale.

Awesome artisan magic at Talbot Yard
Turn right outside the Museum, up Yorkersgate past the lovely Talbot Hotel on the other side of the road. Take the steps up and you’ll find yourself in Talbot Yard, which is a charming converted coaching yard at the heart of Malton’s foodie scene.
Talbot Yard is home to artisan producers including a bakery, butcher, gelateria, coffee roastery, distillery and macaron maker. It is perfect for browsing, tasting local treats and soaking up Malton’s independent food culture.

Groovy Moo Gelato awaits!
Groovy Moo in Talbot Yard is a joyful stop for freshly made gelato in the heart of Malton’s foodie quarter. Expect creamy Yorkshire-made flavours, from salted caramel to Bakewell tart, plus sundaes and waffles in a cheerful café setting. Then, make your way out of Talbot Yard straight into Market Street and your next stop, The Wesley Centre is the opposite side of the road!

Have a look round St. Michael's Church
St Michael’s Church sits right in Malton’s Market Place, earning its nickname “the Church in the Market Place.” It is generally open during the daytime, welcoming visitors to look round and enjoy the quiet interior. Inside, look for stained glass, historic architecture, peaceful seating and centuries of worship woven into the building.

Devour the delights of Ryedale Remakes
This place is a bric a brac emporium ready to be explored! Ryedale Remakes is a creative upcycling shop and workshop in Malton, turning unwanted items into unique furniture, art, homeware and decorations. Launched in 2023, it is not-for-profit and encourages visitors to buy, donate, remake and join sustainability workshops. It is a lovely stop for eco-conscious browsing.

Take the 840 Coastliner bus back to York
Walk down Saville Street, then turn left onto Old Maltongate, cross the road and immediately turn right into Railway Street, then back over the River Derwent to the Bus Station. It’s then a pleasant, scenic journey back to York, arriving back at the Railway Station at 17:56, with the bus continuing on to Leeds, where it nestles into the City Centre bus station at 19:02.
