Treborth Botanic Garden.

Treborth Botanic Garden is the working botanic garden of Bangor University, occupying around 18 hectares on the southern edge of the city above the Menai Strait. Originally laid out in the 1840s by Joseph Paxton as ornamental grounds for a hotel that was never completed, the site was acquired by the university in the 1960s and has since developed into a centre for plant science, conservation and public engagement.

Visitors can explore a varied landscape of mature woodland, wildflower meadows, a rhododendron dell, herbaceous borders and a small arboretum, with paths leading down towards the Strait and views across to Anglesey. Several glasshouses contain themed collections including tropical plants, orchids, cacti and a notable group of carnivorous species. The garden also holds national collections used in research and student teaching.

Treborth is run with strong involvement from a Friends group and student volunteers, and runs guided walks, plant sales and seasonal events through the year. Entry to the outdoor gardens is free, making it a quiet and rewarding stop for anyone visiting Bangor, walking the coastal path or crossing between the mainland and Anglesey.
