Bailey Hill, Mold

Bailey Hill is the surviving mound of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle that dominates a hilltop to the south-west of Mold's town centre. Built in the late 11th or early 12th century, it consists of a large earth mound approximately 40 feet high, originally surrounded by a palisade and then later by a stone keep. The bailey (outer fortified enclosure) no longer survives as a distinct feature, but the mound remains one of the more prominent examples of early Norman defensive architecture in Wales.

You can climb the hill for views across Mold and the surrounding countryside. The site is publicly accessible and free to visit at any time; there are no ruins standing and no facilities, but it's an easy short walk from Mold's town centre and gives a clear sense of the Norman military presence in the area. The hill is worth visiting as much for the panorama as for the archaeological interest, on a clear day you get views towards Snowdonia to the west. It's a quick stop rather than an all-day destination, but makes good sense as part of exploring Mold itself.
