About:

Rishton Waterfall is a hidden gem tucked away just outside the small Lancashire town of Rishton, offering a peaceful and unexpected escape into nature. Though not widely known or signposted, this charming little waterfall is located near the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, where old industrial paths meet greenery and quiet flowing waters.

To visit the waterfall, start your journey in Rishton town centre, perhaps with a coffee or sandwich from a local café or bakery. From there, take a walk down to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath, which is easily accessible from various points, including the bridge near the war memorial. The towpath is flat and pleasant, lined with hedgerows, birdsong, and occasional glimpses of the Pennine hills in the distance.

As you head east along the canal, you’ll pass narrowboats moored quietly by the banks and old mill buildings now softened by time and ivy. After about 15–20 minutes, a small track leads away from the canal, descending slightly into a wooded area. Here, you’ll find the Rishton Waterfall—a modest but beautiful cascade where a small stream tumbles over rocks into a shallow pool below.

While not dramatic in size, the waterfall has a tranquil charm. Moss-covered stones, overhanging trees, and the gentle sound of flowing water create a peaceful atmosphere. It’s an ideal spot for a quiet break, a few photos, or even just to sit and listen to nature. In spring and summer, the surrounding foliage is lush and green, while in autumn the area glows with golden leaves.

The area isn’t a formal nature reserve, so paths may be muddy after rain, and sturdy shoes are a good idea. It’s also a great place for kids to explore or for dog walkers looking for somewhere off the beaten track.

After your visit, you can continue your walk along the canal toward Great Harwood or Church, or simply retrace your steps back into Rishton. With its blend of gentle adventure and local charm, a visit to Rishton Waterfall makes for a refreshing and rewarding outing.
