Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh

The Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh is housed within the historic Brecon Barracks in the market town of Brecon, on the northern edge of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. It tells the story of the South Wales Borderers, the Monmouthshire Regiment and their successors, with displays spanning more than three centuries of Welsh military history.

The museum's most celebrated galleries focus on the defence of Rorke's Drift in January 1879, when a small detachment of the 24th Regiment held off a far larger Zulu force, an action that resulted in eleven Victoria Crosses, the most ever awarded for a single engagement. Original medals, uniforms, weapons and contemporary artwork bring the story vividly to life, alongside material from the regiment's service in the Crimea, both World Wars and more recent campaigns.

Beyond the famous Zulu War exhibits, visitors will find colours, silver, dioramas and personal memorabilia from soldiers of every rank. The setting in the working garrison town of Brecon, with the Usk valley and the Beacons rising beyond, adds to the sense of place. The museum is a natural stop for anyone exploring Brecon by bus or on foot.
