Pontypool, Pontypool

Pontypool developed from a small settlement into a major industrial hub during the 18th and 19th centuries, when its strategic position on the Afon Lwyd made it ideal for iron-making and later tin-plating. The town's prosperity depended on its foundries, rolling mills, and engineering works that exported goods worldwide. Though industrial decline transformed the landscape from the mid-20th century onwards, the town retains evidence of this industrial past in its architecture, street patterns, and the canal system that served the mills.

Today Pontypool serves as a practical base and focal point for exploring the surrounding Valleys landscape. The town offers local shops, services, and transport connections, whilst the countryside immediately beyond offers walking, cycling, and access to heritage railways.
