Nuneham Courtenay
About:
Nuneham Courtenay is a small and picturesque village just south of Oxford, known for its elegant cottages, peaceful countryside and historic estate landscapes. Set above the River Thames, the village has a calm rural character while still being close to the city.
One of the main attractions here is Harcourt Arboretum, a 130-acre botanical collection managed by University of Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum. The arboretum is a beautiful place to explore throughout the year, with winding woodland paths leading through a wide range of tree collections from around the world. Seasonal displays make each visit different, from colourful autumn foliage to carpets of bluebells in spring.
A highlight within the arboretum is the collection of conifers and redwoods, some of which tower dramatically above the woodland paths. Visitors can also discover peaceful glades, meadow areas and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding Oxfordshire countryside. The arboretum’s peacock population adds to its distinctive character, with the birds often wandering freely through the grounds.
Back in the village itself, the quiet lanes and historic cottages make for a pleasant walk. The settlement was carefully redesigned in the 18th century by the Harcourt family, who moved the original medieval village to its present location to improve the landscape around their estate. This planned layout gives Nuneham Courtenay its distinctive appearance today.
Nearby stands the elegant Nuneham House estate, once the home of the Harcourt family. Although the house itself is privately owned and not generally open to the public, the surrounding parkland and countryside provide beautiful walking routes.
