About:

Cholsey and Wallingford Railway is a charming heritage railway offering a nostalgic journey through the countryside of South Oxfordshire. Often affectionately known as the “Bunk Line,” the railway recreates the atmosphere of traditional British branch lines and provides visitors with a relaxed and scenic experience.

The railway runs between the village of Cholsey and the historic market town of Wallingford. Although the journey is only around two and a half miles long, it offers a delightful glimpse into the golden age of railway travel as vintage trains pass through open countryside, farmland and quiet woodland.

The original line opened in 1866 as a branch of the Great Western Railway. It connected Wallingford to the main railway network at Cholsey, making it easier for local goods and passengers to travel between the town and larger destinations. Over time, however, changing travel patterns and the rise of road transport led to a decline in passenger numbers, and the line eventually closed in 1959.

Fortunately, railway enthusiasts later revived the route as a heritage attraction. Today the railway is run largely by volunteers who work to preserve historic locomotives, carriages and railway traditions. Visitors can ride behind classic diesel locomotives and occasionally steam engines, travelling in restored vintage coaches that recreate the look and feel of mid-20th-century rail travel.

At Wallingford Railway Station, visitors can explore the small heritage station, which features traditional signage, historic displays and a café serving refreshments. Special event days throughout the year often include themed train rides, vintage vehicles and family activities.

Whether you are a railway enthusiast or simply looking for a relaxing short journey through the Oxfordshire countryside, the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway offers a nostalgic glimpse into Britain’s railway heritage.
