About Bangor Cathedral

Bangor Cathedral sits at the heart of the small city of Bangor in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. It is one of the oldest Christian sites in the British Isles, with origins traced back to the monastic foundation of St Deiniol in the early sixth century. This long history makes Bangor a contender for the longest continuously used cathedral site in the United Kingdom, though the present building is largely a result of medieval rebuilding and a substantial Victorian restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott.

The cathedral is modest in scale compared with England's great Gothic churches, but that intimacy is part of its appeal. Visitors will find a low, broad nave, fine stained glass, and a notable collection of medieval and later carvings. The Mostyn Christ, a rare late-medieval wooden figure of Christ Bound, is among the building's most important treasures. Memorials inside record bishops, Welsh churchmen and local families across many centuries.

The surrounding Bible Garden, planted with species mentioned in scripture, gives the precinct a quiet, green setting just off Bangor's High Street. The cathedral is within easy walking distance of Bangor railway station and the bus interchange, making it a natural first stop for visitors exploring the city, the nearby Menai Strait and the gateway towns to Snowdonia.
