Northgate Street is one of the principal streets running through the centre of Chester, linking the historic core with the northern edge of the city. Like much of Chester, it carries a strong sense of continuity, where modern life unfolds against a backdrop shaped by centuries of change.

The street takes its name from the Northgate, one of the original entrances through the Roman and later medieval city walls. This route would once have guided travellers into the fortified settlement of Deva Victrix, and although the gate itself has changed over time, the sense of it as an important thoroughfare remains. Walking along Northgate Street today, you are following a path that has been in use for nearly two thousand years.

Architecturally, the street offers a rich mix. Traditional black-and-white timbered buildings appear alongside more recent developments, creating a layered streetscape that feels distinctly Chester. The famous Rows are present here too, with their elevated walkways adding a second level of shops above the street. Looking up, you notice details that might otherwise be missed from ground level, from carved beams to small windows tucked beneath sloping roofs.

One of the most prominent modern additions is Storyhouse, a cultural centre that combines a theatre, cinema and library within a single space. Its contemporary design contrasts with the surrounding historic buildings, yet it has quickly become an integral part of the street’s identity. It brings a steady flow of people throughout the day and into the evening, adding energy and variety to the area.
