Journey Overview
The bus makes its way out of historic Northampton, onto the suburban outskirts, past the huge remains of the old First Bus depot on the left, then to Sixfields, past an array of shops and having past the famous Northampton Saints Rugby Ground before then rising high above Northampton Town Football Ground.
Through pretty Upton and then the bus is out on a dual carriage way with trees and fields either side of the bus. Part of the fascination though are the huge distribution hubs, this being the centre of the UK and the most accessible places for distribution of parcels and much more to be made across the nation. John Lewis, Hotel Chocolate (including the big salivating store on site) and Royal Mail – just to name a few, as the bus whirls around their perimeters, but never leaving blissful countryside.
Stone brick houses, pretty cottages, green pastures and lovely garden centres take centre stage as the bus whisks through the charming villages of Upper Heyford, Flore (with its stunning church) and Dodford, but Daventry approaches, rich in history and with many delightful independent shops close to where the bus makes its final stop – the end of a somewhat quirky and always enthralling journey.
A Fab Day Out!
Start your day in Northampton with breakfast at The Good Loaf, a much-loved artisan bakery known for its freshly baked bread, pastries, and excellent coffee. It’s the kind of place that feels quietly bustling in the morning, with the smell of sourdough and cinnamon rolls setting the tone for a relaxed start. Grab a window seat if you can and ease into the day before heading out to explore.
From here, spend a couple of hours discovering the town centre. Begin at the Northampton Guildhall, where the intricate Gothic architecture makes for an impressive first stop. Just nearby, wander through the Market Square, one of the largest in England, where you’ll often find a mix of local stalls and everyday town life. If you prefer something quieter, take a short walk to Becket’s Park and follow the river for a peaceful change of pace before your journey continues.
When you’re ready, hop on the D2 bus, settling in for a scenic ride out of Northampton. The route gradually shifts from urban streets to more open surroundings, offering glimpses of Northamptonshire’s softer, greener landscape. Your first stop is Sixfields Retail Park, where you can break up the journey. Here, you’ll find a mix of shops, cafés, and leisure options. It’s a good place to stretch your legs, perhaps grab a quick drink, or browse before continuing on.
Back on the D2, the journey towards Daventry becomes increasingly rural, with open fields and small clusters of countryside buildings replacing the busier roads. Arriving in Daventry, you’ll find a compact and welcoming market town that’s easy to explore on foot.
Start in the town centre, where the streets curve gently around a mix of independent shops and familiar names. A short walk brings you to Borough Hill, one of the town’s most striking features. If you’re up for it, the climb rewards you with wide views across the surrounding countryside, along with a sense of quiet that feels far removed from the morning’s bustle.
For a more relaxed pace, head to Daventry Country Park, where walking trails loop around a reservoir and through open green space. It’s ideal for an afternoon wander, with plenty of spots to pause and take in the scenery.
Finish your trip with afternoon tea at The Saracens Head, a traditional setting that offers a cosy atmosphere and a classic selection of teas, cakes, and light bites. It’s a fitting end to a day that blends town, countryside, and easy travel, all connected by a simple bus journey through Northamptonshire.
