Inverlochy Castle

Inverlochy Castle is one of Scotland’s most impressive medieval castle ruins, sitting just outside Fort William beneath the towering presence of Ben Nevis. Despite its age, the castle remains remarkably well preserved, offering visitors a rare chance to explore the layout of a 13th-century fortress almost exactly as it once stood.

The castle was built in the late 1200s by John Comyn, one of the most powerful noblemen in medieval Scotland. Its strategic position controlled important routes through the Highlands, particularly the Great Glen corridor. The design is classic medieval military architecture: a large rectangular enclosure surrounded by thick stone curtain walls, with round towers at each corner and a gatehouse guarding the entrance.

Walking through the ruins today gives a strong sense of how formidable the castle once was. Visitors can step inside the courtyard and wander along the towering walls, which still rise dramatically from the grassy ground. The four corner towers remain particularly impressive, offering a glimpse into how defenders would have watched the surrounding landscape for approaching enemies.

Inverlochy Castle also played a role in two significant battles during the turbulent history of the Scottish Highlands. The first took place in 1431 during a conflict between the Clan Donald and forces loyal to the Scottish crown. The second, and more famous, occurred nearby in 1645 during the Battle of Inverlochy, when the royalist army led by James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose defeated government forces.

One of the most striking aspects of Inverlochy Castle is its setting. The ruins stand beside a peaceful stretch of water known as the old castle moat, reflecting the stone walls and surrounding trees. In the distance, the slopes of Ben Nevis rise dramatically, creating one of the most atmospheric historic landscapes in the Highlands.
