About Perth's city center architecture

Perth, the so-called Fair City on the River Tay, has a compact and walkable centre rich in Georgian and Victorian architecture. As one of Scotland's former capitals it retains a sense of civic ambition out of proportion to its size, with elegant streets and squares laid out from the late 18th century onwards as the medieval burgh expanded westwards towards the North and South Inches.

Highlights include the classical sweep of Rose Terrace and Atholl Crescent overlooking the North Inch, the imposing dome of St Paul's and the spire of St John's Kirk, the medieval church from which Perth (St John's Toun) takes its older name. Tay Street runs along the river with a procession of grand Victorian frontages including the former Sheriff Court, the Municipal Buildings and the recently reopened Perth Museum, housed in the City Hall, where the Stone of Destiny is now displayed. Nearby, Kinnoull Street, George Street and the High Street offer a mix of sandstone tenements, banking halls and shopfronts.

Walking tours of the centre take in narrow vennels and closes that survive from the medieval grid, while bridges across the Tay frame views back towards Kinnoull Hill on the eastern bank.
