Scapa Beach

Scapa Beach is a gently curving stretch of pale sand and shell on the southern outskirts of Kirkwall, the main town of Orkney. Looking out across the vast natural harbour of Scapa Flow, the beach offers a quiet, sheltered spot within easy walking distance of the town centre, framed by low grassy banks and the distant outlines of Hoy, Flotta and the smaller South Isles on the horizon.

The bay has a powerful sense of history. Scapa Flow served as a major base for the Royal Navy in both World Wars, and it was here that the German High Seas Fleet was scuttled in 1919, with several of the wrecks still lying on the seabed and drawing divers from around the world. The Scapa Distillery sits just above the beach, one of Orkney's celebrated single malt producers, and the coastal path along the shore links walkers north into Kirkwall and south towards the Churchill Barriers.

Calm, shallow water makes Scapa popular with families, paddleboarders and wild swimmers, while birdwatchers can often spot eider ducks, oystercatchers and seals from the shore. Regular local buses connect Kirkwall with the surrounding parishes, and the beach is an easy walk or short cycle from the town centre and ferry terminal.
