Portree Harbour

Portree Harbour sits at the heart of the largest town on the Isle of Skye, sheltered within a deep sea loch on the island's east coast. The crescent of brightly painted houses lining the quayside, in pinks, blues, yellows and ochres, is one of the most photographed scenes in the Scottish Highlands and gives the harbour its instantly recognisable character.

The working pier is still busy with small fishing boats and pleasure craft, and local operators run wildlife cruises out into the Sound of Raasay where sea eagles, seals, porpoises and occasional dolphins or minke whales can be spotted. Boats also run across to the neighbouring islands of Raasay and Rona. Steep steps and a winding road climb from the quay up to Somerled Square and the main town, where shops, galleries, pubs and seafood restaurants make use of the day's catch.

The harbour is a natural base for exploring Skye, with the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing and the Trotternish ridge all within easy driving distance. Buses connect Portree with Kyleakin, Uig and the Skye Bridge, making it accessible without a car.
