Minster Abbey

Minster Abbey was founded around 664 AD as one of England's earliest Benedictine convents, serving as a significant religious and educational centre throughout the medieval period. The site's long history is evident in the architectural layers that remain: foundations and partial walls from different eras, plus the later parish church of St Mary and St Sexburga which incorporates material from the original abbey. The abbey was dissolved at the Reformation and fell into decay, with subsequent buildings constructed on or near the site.

Visitors can see the substantial remains of the medieval abbey church, including parts of the nave and chancel walls, along with the later parish church which contains period monuments and windows. The site is set in gardens and open ground, creating a contemplative atmosphere despite its long history of abandonment and reuse. The church itself remains active and welcomes visitors. The landscape around Minster has changed little in character, remaining rural and windswept, which helps evoke a sense of how this remote religious community would have existed. The site is accessible on foot and the adjacent village of Minster provides basic facilities.
