Canterbury

Canterbury is a cathedral city steeped in over two thousand years of history. At its heart stands Canterbury Cathedral, one of England's most significant religious buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral is the mother church of the Church of England and has been a pilgrimage destination since the time of Thomas Becket in the 12th century. Around it spreads a compact medieval city with narrow lanes, timber-framed buildings and cobbled streets that invite exploration on foot.

The city centre contains independent shops, cafes, restaurants and markets, making it a practical destination for an afternoon or full day's visit. St Augustine's Abbey, another UNESCO site, stands just outside the medieval walls and offers insights into the early Christian history of England. The River Great Stour flows through the city, with riverside walks and boats offering a different perspective on the landscape. The Westgate Towers, a 14th-century gateway, provides views over the city and is open to visitors.

Canterbury works well as both a destination in itself and a stop on a broader route exploring Kent. The rail station is well-connected to London and the coast, while the historic core is entirely walkable.
