About McManus Galleries, Dundee
The McManus Galleries, named after its donor David Baxter McManus, is one of Scotland's premier art and history museums. Housed in an imposing Victorian Gothic building completed in 1867, the gallery dominates the Nethergate in central Dundee with its red sandstone walls, ornate turrets and elaborate architectural detailing. The building itself is a masterpiece of Victorian design and craftsmanship, constructed during the height of Dundee's prosperity as a jute manufacturing centre.
Inside, the galleries showcase exceptional collections spanning fine art, design, archaeology, and natural history. Visitors will encounter works by renowned Scottish artists, Impressionist paintings, contemporary installations, and thought-provoking temporary exhibitions. The natural history galleries feature dinosaur skeletons, Egyptian mummies, and artefacts from across the world, whilst the archaeology sections explore the rich pre-history and early history of Scotland. The museum's decorative arts collections celebrate Scottish craftsmanship and international design movements. The atmospheric Victorian interiors, with soaring ceilings, ornate plasterwork and period details, enhance the experience of viewing these treasures. Free admission to the permanent collections makes the McManus accessible to all, and the building's position near other city centre attractions makes it a natural stop for visitors exploring Dundee's cultural offerings.
