Marine Town Seafront

Marine Town is the heart of Sheerness, the main resort settlement on the Isle of Sheppey. The seafront promenade runs along a sandy and shingle beach with views across the wide waters of the Thames estuary towards Essex and the wider North Sea. The area has the character of a traditional English seaside resort, with amusement arcades, cafes, fish and chip shops, and holiday accommodation mixed with modern facilities. The beach is used for swimming, paddling, fishing and general seaside leisure, and the promenade is a focal point for walks and people-watching.

The seafront setting is dominated by wide-open horizons, tidal mudflats and shingle, with the beach becoming extensive at low tide. The area is backed by a mix of Victorian and Edwardian villas, 20th-century hotels and modern holiday parks, reflecting its development as a resort. Sheerness Pier once extended into the water but is now largely heritage, serving as a focal point for the seafront. The promenade includes playgrounds, sitting areas and cafes, making it accessible for all visitors. The seafront is particularly lively during summer holiday periods and weekends. Historically, Sheerness developed as a naval dockyard and commercial port, which remains evident in the working harbours and industrial facilities visible along the coast.
