Margate Old Town

Margate's Old Town sprawls across the streets radiating uphill from the Old Harbour. It's a tangle of narrow lanes lined with independent boutiques, vintage shops, galleries, cafes, and bars, many housed in Georgian and Victorian buildings that give the quarter genuine character. Street art and murals are woven throughout, and on summer weekends it feels lively with a younger crowd drawn by the eclectic mix of shops and food venues.

The Old Harbour itself sits at the heart of this quarter: a working fishing harbour surrounded by colourwashed houses and the lifeboat station. You can buy fresh fish from stalls on the quay, sit on the harbourside wall to watch fishing boats come and go, or simply wander the surrounding streets. There's no major museum or single 'sight' here; the appeal is in the wandering, the independent retailers, and the sense of a genuinely lived-in seaside neighbourhood rather than purely touristy infrastructure.

The Old Town is free to explore on foot. Parking is available in the surrounding streets and a small car park near the harbour. The contrast between the commercialised main beach area and this quieter, more artisanal quarter makes it worth setting aside an hour or two.
