About Kent and East Sussex Railway

The Kent and East Sussex Railway is a restored heritage railway operating steam and vintage diesel trains along a scenic route through the Weald. Based at Tenterden, the railway runs trains southbound towards Bodiam in East Sussex, passing through rural stations and offering passengers a nostalgic journey on vintage rolling stock from the Edwardian era and later periods.

The railway operates seasonally with a varied timetable of steam and diesel-hauled services, heritage buses, and special event trains. Visitors can board at Tenterden Station and travel on open and closed carriages, enjoying views across farmland and woodland characteristic of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The railway also hosts themed dining experiences and family events throughout the year, such as Halloween and Christmas specials.

Tenterden Station itself has been carefully restored as a period terminus, complete with a working signal box, station master's office, and small heritage collection. There is a buffet car on train services and a station cafe. The railway is maintained by volunteers and the organisation plays an important role in heritage preservation, using operating revenue to fund track maintenance and restoration of historic rolling stock.
