About Kennet and Avon Canal, Berkshire
The Kennet and Avon Canal is one of England's finest waterway heritage trails, linking the River Thames at Reading with the River Avon at Bath. Through Berkshire, the canal meanders past countryside villages, towpaths lined with wildflowers, and locks that tell the story of Georgian engineering. Built in stages between 1794 and 1810, it served as a vital commercial route before railways transformed inland transport.
Visitors can walk or cycle the entire route or enjoy shorter sections. The towpath offers excellent opportunities to observe canal wildlife including water voles, herons, and kingfishers. Narrowboat hire is available at several points, allowing visitors to experience the canal at leisure. The waterway passes through Newbury, where it meets Newbury Lock, one of the busiest on the canal system.
Today the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust maintains the waterway, and it remains a tranquil escape from modern life. The canal's 105 locks and stone-built aqueducts represent remarkable feats of 18th-century construction. Public access is free along the towpath, making it an ideal destination for families and nature lovers seeking a day exploring Berkshire's heritage landscape.
